What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open, standardized protocol designed to enable AI models—especially large language models (LLMs)—to interact with external tools, data sources, and services in a structured, secure, and extensible way.
MCP acts as a universal interface, much like a USB-C port for AI, allowing applications to provide and retrieve context for LLMs, facilitating richer, more relevant, and up-to-date interactions.

Key Features of MCP:

  • Standardization: Provides a single protocol for connecting AI to many tools, reducing the need for custom integrations.
  • Security and Control: Allows organizations to control what data and actions the AI can access.
  • Stateful Interactions: Maintains context across sessions, enabling multi-step workflows.
  • Extensibility: Supports a growing ecosystem of pre-built integrations and servers for popular platforms (e.g., Google Drive, GitHub, Kubernetes).
  • Client-Server Architecture: MCP clients (AI applications) communicate with MCP servers (which expose data or actions) using JSON-RPC over various transports (local or HTTP)
MCP Architecture

MCP follows a client-server architecture where a host application can connect to multiple servers

  • MCP Hosts: Programs like Claude Desktop, IDEs, or AI tools that want to access data through MCP
  • MCP Clients: Protocol clients that maintain 1:1 connections with servers
  • MCP Servers: Lightweight programs that each expose specific capabilities through the standardized Model Context Protocol
  • Local Data Sources: Your computer’s files, databases, and services that MCP servers can securely access
  • Remote Services: External systems available over the internet (e.g., through APIs) that MCP servers can connect to

MCP in Kubernetes: How to Use It

MCP can be integrated with Kubernetes through specialized MCP servers that expose Kubernetes operations and data to AI agents or LLM-powered tools, This allows AI assistants to manage, query, and automate Kubernetes resources using natural language or structured requests.

How MCP Works with Kubernetes

  • MCP Kubernetes Server: Acts as a bridge between AI tools and your Kubernetes cluster. It wraps kubectl commands and exposes them via the MCP protocol.
  • Supported Operations:
    • Creating, updating, or scaling deployments,
    • Listing pods, namespaces, nodes, services, jobs, cronjobs, statefulsets, daemonsets,
    • Switching contexts, Fetching logs or events,
    • Annotating, labeling, or deleting resources,
    • Exposing deployments or port-forwarding.
  • Interaction Flow
    • MCP Client (AI agent or application): Issues a request (e.g., "Scale the nginx deployment to 5 replicas").
    • MCP Server for Kubernetes: Receives the request, translates it to the appropriate Kubernetes API or kubectl command, and executes it.
    • Response: The server returns structured results or status updates to the AI client, which can then inform the user or trigger further actions.

Example Use Cases:

  • Automating DevOps workflows via AI chat or scripts
  • Natural language querying of cluster state ("Show me all pods in production")
  • AI-powered troubleshooting and remediation
  • Secure, auditable access to Kubernetes operations

We just started Learning MCP with kubernetes, Soon we will post More Live used Cases and Demos in the upcoming Newsletters.
